Cytomegalovirus or CMV is a common type of herpes virus that is passed between healthy children and adults.
In rare cases, it can cause complications for an unborn baby. Most recently CMV has been a hot topic in the media urging that pregnant women be well informed about pre-pregnancy screening and prevention.
This CMV Pregnancy Factsheet published by NSW Health and updated in 2017 is a guide to understanding CMV, it’s origins and reducing exposure risks.

CMV is not a notifiable disease in Australia. Currently, there is no licensed vaccine in Australia for CMV, but vaccine trials are underway.
