Every day we are hearing more news about the Zika virus. This virus is transmitted primarily by a specific mosquito found in South America as well as a few other areas like French Polynesia. There is a very low risk of transmission in Australia as this particular mosquito is only found in North Queensland. Local mosquitos are not known to spread the virus.
Women who are pregnant or who are considering pregnancy should consider delaying their travel to areas with active outbreaks of Zika. Testing for the Zika virus is available and involves a blood test.
